Besides casinos, poker is played in homes, clubs, and on the Internet. While there are many different versions of poker, the basic rules are similar. In each version, players place bets towards a pot until a showdown occurs. The winner is the player who holds the highest-ranking poker hand. There are two standard poker hands: the straight and the flush. These hands are made from five cards, which can be a combination of a player’s pocket cards and the community cards.
The first bet is typically called the ante. It is the minimum bet that a player can make. The bet is usually limited to a fixed amount and is determined by the stakes of the game.
